Could this be Fiona Apple’s new album cover?
This photo appeared on Fiona Apple’s Facebook page yesterday, with no caption or leading information. The poem, it was announced earlier, is the title of her new, release-date-still-TBA record. Yes, another album title that’s an entire poem. I wouldn’t be surprised if this photo of notepaper turns out to be the new record’s cover art. The cover of her last album was a photograph she took of a flower, which she chose because, she said, it got her out of having to do another photo shoot. Homegirl’s never particularly enjoyed a photo shoot.
The more I live with it, the more I like this stanza she’s penned. Fi’s still playing with the nautical theme she’s often visited (see “Sullen Girl,” “O’ Sailor”), and still evincing her own theories about desistance propelling self-actualization (“Waltz,” “Extraordinary Machine”). I especially like the last idea, “whipping cords will serve you more than ropes will ever do.” Whipping cords or whipping knots, for all you landlubbers, are the special binding at the end of a rope that keeps it from fraying or unraveling. That Fiona Apple’s one smart cookie.
