Calling all ladies of the Internet

In this Jezebel piece, Katie J.M. Baker calls out the New York Times Book Review for its propagation of tired, antiquated gender norms: the “How-To Issue lists eight pieces on its cover, two of which are written by women. And guess what they’re about? Raising children and cooking.”

You know, women stuff.

Except not.

In response, there now exists a How-To Tumblr, to which creator Molly Templeton and Jezebel invite ALL women to contribute. The deadline for submissions is this Sunday, August 5.

Get cracking! No dinner till you’ve finished your homework!!

Preach.

I’ve started a book club with a few of my new coworkers. Our first book (my selection) is Naomi Wolf’s The Beauty Myth. It’s a crucial book every person should read, about the ways we’ve unknowingly internalized ideas of “beauty” that are rooted in commerce, anti-feminism and gender oppression. It’s fascinating—and it’s useful information—regardless of your gender.

This woman is giving you a thumbs up. IS THIS FEMINIST?
TRIGGER WARNING. The “thumbs up” is the most phallocentric gesture imaginable. You are literally telling someone that a good job is the equivalent of growing a penis. In this case, two penises.
Additionally, this kind of casual congratulation has been known to put the recipient in a good mood, which can lead to entire minutes of complacency about their own privilege. PROBLEMATIC.

If you spent years of your life studying feminist theory and have half a sense of humor about the esoteric verbiage you spew while you proselytize, boy howdy do I have the blog for you. Did I just say “boy howdy”? PROBLEMATIC. Any-genderless-who, be sure to check out the entries about science and sports.

Bitches get stuff done!

It really grinds my gears to hear a woman say, “I’m not a feminist, but…” and then make some statement that’s 100% in line with feminist ideologies. If you believe in equal rights, then you are a feminist. Stop apologizing for the term, and stop perpetuating its negative connotations. Educate yourself and start helping others understand that “feminist” is not a dirty word. The beloved Tina Fey is a feminist. So is the equally awesome Amy Poehler. And obvs, Hillary Clinton. And guess who else:

The blatant male gaze all up in this Mad Men promotional photo just means the show is authentic to its second-wave era, right?
