WTF with Marc Maron, Episode 297 - Fiona Apple

If you want to learn something, and I mean REALLY learn something, about Fiona Apple and why she makes such erractic, beautiful records, settle in with this excellent interview by comedian Marc Maron. Topics covered in this hour-long podcast include potato bugs, humming birds and why they made Fiona give up alcohol, health food, couples colonics, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Fiona’s family life and Melungeon bloodline, and a hundred other things. Fiona’s segment begins at 14:00.
This is now a Fiona Apple blog

The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do is out June 19.
Several critics have labeled this a difficult record, a jarring, uneasy listen. And so, I won’t be partaking for another 12 hours, because I’m at work. BEST/WORST DAY EVER. You—you who are soulless multitaskers—enjoy it, and you keep your mouths shut until tomorrow.
While you were sleeping, the people at Sony posted Fiona Apple’s new video to her Facebook page. It’s fitting that this was released to the Internet at 2 a.m. EST—the video itself is like a harrowing anxiety dream. Fiona plays with a hula doll, then she is the doll. She throws fish to a hungry alligator, then finds herself swimming in a gravity-defiant pool (and then finds herself paddling on land, covered in snails—and defying gravity here once more). She’s cuddled by a faceless, skinless body, then curls up in bed with a man with a goat’s head. Strands of light beaming from Fiona’s heart chakra act as marionette strings in another scene, reference the temporal anomalies Fi has talked about in recent interviews, and reminds us of all that’s going on inside her idler wheel. Sometimes it takes you seven years to put out a record. But sometimes you’ve got ALL THIS going on in your head. And also there’s a squid on it.
Wowaweewah, here’s a teaser of Fiona Apple’s new video for “Every Single Night.” It looks as trippy and intense as the song itself—in this 15-second clip, there’s a shot of Fi in a messy, cluttered bedroom, paddling through a claustrophobic tank of water, attempting to swim on land in the grass and dirt among snails (her favorite thing), and dutifully traversing a bridge while what looks like a tentacled monster lurks in the background. There are several images of the Eiffel Tower, and focused beams of light appear in multiple shots. What does it mean? Fiona may not even know. “I told [director] Joey [Cahill] just to come up with a bunch of things and just do things to me and put me in situations and surprise me,” she tells Pitchfork.
The Sundance Channel premieres the video in full this Sunday at 8 p.m.
Presumably, the final mix of Fiona Apple’s “Every Single Night.” Posted to her Facebook page five minutes ago. You’re welcome.
This image popped up on Fiona Apple’s Facebook page a few minutes ago, along with a link to the handwritten lyrics. Could it mean “Every Single Night” will be The Idler Wheel’s lead single? It would be a wise choice, since the live version sounds pretty Florence-and-the-Machiney, and Flo has been nominated for no less than 5 dozen awards in the past 3 years.
I’m quite sure this is Fiona’s own artwork, as well. Stylistically, it fits with her original art that’s been showcased in music videos like “Limp” and that appeared on the wall in Claudia’s apartment in Magnolia. I just spent the past 26 minutes searching for these images so I could prove it to you, but haven’t found them yet. If anyone has any JPEGs, please send them!
Fiona Apple has tour dates, and aren’t you lucky, you North American jerks.
